LACoSLSA provides scholarships and support for junior lifeguards who need financial assistance. The JG program is a critical initiative to developing future generations of ocean competency and safety. We value the investment in youth to continue to grow and develop their ocean skills while building confidence, environmental awareness and camaraderie. Our association is dedicated to continuing this support to increase access and outreach to all areas of Los Angeles.
As experts in our field we will continue to share our knowledge of ocean safety to youth and adults in the community. Our first initiative began with free adult education courses and expanded to include young lifesavers called "nippers." The course covers local ocean conditions, wildlife and safety tips for a variety of ocean conditions with hands on experience.
LACoSLSA's first public education campaign involved distributing drink coasters to restaurants throughout the beach cities of Los Angeles County during summer 2015. The coasters provided education on how swimmers can safely escape from a rip current.
The original rip current artwork was developed through a Sea Grant project in collaboration with NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and the USLA (United States Lifesaving Association). It will also support programs, events and initiatives that foster public safety awareness in open water environments. Every dollar donated to, or raised by, LACoSLSA is used to support the LA County Lifeguards, their Junior Lifeguard program, the purchase and maintenance of ocean training equipment, and the creation and distribution of water safety educational materials aimed at the public, beachgoers and public safety personnel.
